Future job search
In 2020, I collaborated with a team of three designers on a project for the Australian Department of Employment. Our goal was to reimagine and design a future job search portal to replace the outdated Jobactive platform. The new portal aimed to simplify the job search process and provide Australians with innovative tools for employment and career development.
Challenges
The existing Jobactive platform faced significant usability issues, including:
A complex and frustrating onboarding process.
Vague and unclear instructions that confused users.
An outdated and cluttered design, contributing to inefficiency.
These barriers undermined user engagement and made the job search process unnecessarily challenging. A modern, user-focused redesign was essential to better support job seekers and improve outcomes.
Solutions
Our team proposed a user-centred redesign adhering to modern web standards and best practices.
Key solutions included:
Simplified onboarding: Step-by-step guides with clear, plain-language instructions.
Modern design: A clean, minimalist interface to improve readability and reduce visual clutter.
Enhanced functionality: Personalised job recommendations, refined search tools, and a streamlined application process.
Integrated support: Built-in resources for skills development and an AI-powered mock interview feature to better prepare users for the workforce.
These enhancements were designed to make the platform intuitive, engaging, and supportive for job seekers at all stages of their career journey.
Outcomes
The project secured funding and culminated in the launch of Workforce Australia on 4 July 2022.
This modern, user-centred platform replaced Jobactive and introduced:
Streamlined navigation for improved usability.
Personalised job recommendations tailored to individual needs.
An AI-powered mock interview feature to enhance job readiness.
The result was a significant boost in user satisfaction, with a more efficient and empowering job search experience for Australians.
